Soriana Sofa
Designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa in 1969, the Soriana arrived as a quiet but decisive proposition: that a sofa need not rely on a hidden skeleton to hold its form. In place of a conventional interior frame, generous volumes of polyurethane foam are gathered and shaped by a single enveloping metal clasp. The silhouette is a direct consequence of that structural gesture, nothing more.
It was a precise response to a charged cultural moment. Italian design in the late 1960s was pulling at the conventions of domestic furniture, and the Scarpas answered not with severity or irony, but with warmth. Rounded, enveloping contours invite repose. The proportions are soft without being formless, considered without feeling calculated.
