Plank Carafe

The Plank Carafe is a study in considered restraint. Designed by Nendo for Zens, the slender ceramic cylinder is topped with a flat wooden lid positioned deliberately off-center, so that when tilted for pouring, the lid acts as a natural strainer. Function becomes gesture.

Nendo, the Tokyo-based studio led by Oki Sato, approaches objects with a kind of quiet humor and formal precision. Here, the logic is inverted from the companion pieces in the collection: where the coffee cups, milk jar, and sugar bowl use an upraised handle to hold the wooden lid in place, the carafe strips that element away entirely, letting the lid's own geometry do the work.
