Designed in 1958 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, the Drop Chair represents one of Arne Jacobsen's most considered gestures toward the relationship between form and the human body. The chair was conceived as part of a total design environment, where furniture, architecture, and interior were conceived as a single, unified whole.
Its teardrop silhouette is immediately recognizable, yet the shape is never arbitrary. The compact shell wraps gently around the sitter, offering a sense of enclosure without confinement. Jacobsen understood that comfort is as much psychological as it is physical, and the Drop Chair embodies that conviction.
Fritz Hansen relaunched the design in 2014, applying contemporary upholstery options and production precision to a form that had remained largely unseen for decades. The result is a chair that reads as both archive and presence, at ease in a dining room, a workspace, or beside a reading corner.
