Zig Zag Chair
Gerrit Rietveld conceived the Zig Zag in 1934 as an act of radical reduction. A single, continuous plane of wood, folded into an overturned Z, constitutes the entire chair. No legs. No frame. The cantilevered seat holds its form through the integrity of the material and the precision of exposed dovetail joints at the rear junction of seat and back.
Where Rietveld's earlier Red Blue Chair announced its construction through color, the Zig Zag speaks through grain and geometry. It arrived at the height of the De Stijl movement's inquiry into elemental form, and its authority has only deepened with time.
Cassina produces the chair in natural cherry, natural ash, and a colored open-pore finish that allows the wood's natural veining to remain visible. The dovetail joinery is structural and visible, a detail that is simultaneously functional and compositional.
